2006...Inaugural Open Air Classic

In previous years, it was known as the "Wisconsin Convertible Classic". Some "internal changes" in the "management" of the event resulted in the name change to the "Open Air Classic"...but no change in the fun-content of the event. Our 5th running took us first on a side-trip to Chicago to see the "King Tut" exhibit at the Field Museum, then to far-northern Wisconsin...Ashland...on the shores of Lake Superior.

Perfect weather was once again provided by the organizers, and the roads didn't disappoint, either. Ashland is a quaint little town that has taken advantage of their historical society, some talented artists and blank building walls downtown to decorate their downtown area quite distinctively. Day one culminated with dinner and an exhibition of Native American dancing provided by some energetic young people followed by an evening at the Bad River Casino.

Day two was equally perfect weather-wise and included a half-hour ferry trip from Bayfield to Madeline Island. Many of the checkpoints for day two required more walking than driving, but both Bayfield and the Island were interesting. One of the checkpoints, "Tom's Burned Down Cafe", was quite 'tacky' (in the most fun way). The evening concluded with a fun folk music/comedy tent-show.

Sunday brought the close to another fun event. Whether it's the "Wisconsin Convertible Classic" or the "Open Air Classic", it spells a weekend of great cars, great roads, great fun.
