Wisconsin Convertible Classic 2005

For the 4th time, we signed up to participate in the "World's Greatest Open-Air Auto Spectacular"...the Wisconsin Convertible Classic. This year we would be going back to the east side of Wisconsin, to Manitowoc...just south of Green Bay, where we had attended our first event. We spent our first night on the road in Beloit and woke up to severe storm warnings. After consulting the local radar, we decided to wait the storms out there rather than trying to get on the road ahead of them. This delayed our departure about an hour past our desired time, but still got us into Manitowoc in time to register for the event and head down to the Maritime Museum to tour the submarine. During WWII, Manitowoc had a plant that built 28 submarines for the war effort and one is still available for tours.Click here to see my pics of the submarine tour.

Friday's drive was pretty much in and around Manitowoc. The weather was pretty cooperative, and the day was spent topless, of course. An excellent dinner, followed by some very good entertainment capped off the day.

Saturday dawned a bit rainy. We were scheduled to leave in the third group...an 8:40 AM departure...and I had the opportunity to dry the car off before headed for the staging area. Then it rained again. Once more, I was able to get the car dried off just in time to drop our top and hit the road. Saturday's drive was more to our liking...more time on the road...more 'twisty' roads...and included 2 'hot laps' on the "World's Fastest Quarter-Mile Oval". The day ended with all 200 cars lined up on the streets of Elkhart Lake for people to admire, and the drawing for the door prizes.

Sunday, all 200 cars paraded to a Classic Car Dealership for the final goodbyes. It capped off this year's "Open-Air Spectacular".

Day one driver's meeting. Pay attention now!

Why is the Ferrari's front hood up...after all...isn't it a mid-engine?

Here's what was under the hood...looks a lot like a lawnmower motor.

Put your tickes in the bucket for the prize you want.

Nope...we didn't get any again this year.
